Lactuca Virosa is now an endangered species in several parts of the world. You can grow this rare biennial for yourself and watch as it can grow up to 2.5 meters or 8.2 feet tall! The leaves also grow very big, some measuring up to 45 centimeters; about a foot and a half long. You may also cross breed it with your garden lettuce as it contains disease and fungus resistant genes. A 1.5 meter plant, 4.9 feet, can produce 46,000 seeds!
Lactuca Serriola is a close cousin of Lactuca Virosa. L. Serriola is an annual, which means that it only takes one season to flower. You may grow it for teas or smoking, and the high alkalinity makes it very suitable for soap making as well. These seeds are very hard to find and are harvested from fields in the Czech countryside.
