H. Newman's Syrup of Lactucarium

H. Newman's Syrup of Lactucarium

This is our very own preparation of Syrup of Lactucarium. It is used as a natural medicine against colds, aches and pains, as well as a natural sleep aid. The flavor is quite bitter with a citrus component and a hint of honey. We followed the original recipe of H. Aubergier pretty closely. It contains our lactucarium which is 100% dried juice from the Lactuca virosa variety of wild lettuce, and California poppy extract in a 40% alcohol solution.

More info

Dr. H. Aubergier was a famous pharmacist from the 19th century, whom lived in in Clermont-Ferrand, France. He is a very important figure in the history of wild lettuce. He advanced the science and production of the lactucarium, and was the chair of the Académie des Sciences, Belles Lettres et Arts de Clermont-Ferrand. His wild lettuce farm covered about 10 hectares in Aubière. The good doctor employed the ladies of the region to harvest the lactucarium latex from the full sized wild lettuce plants. If the ladies could harvest more than 500 grams (1.1 lbs) in a day, they received a certain percentage of the profit. The average yield for a day was a little more than one kilogram, but this kilogram was worth about 300 francs, which today would be worth about $1800!

Syrup of lactucarium was used to suppress coughs and relieve cold symptoms. The active components have been shown in modern studies to have analgesic properties similar to ibuprofen, but with relaxing effects on the nerves. In recent years there has been a reemergence of lactucarium onto the market. People like Dr. Oz have brought attention back on to our favorite plant, wild lettuce. We are happy to offer our very own syrup of lactucarium, taking the original recipe of H. Aubergier, and reformulating it with California Poppy extract.

None of these statements have been evaluated by the FDA and is sold as an herbal remedy.
