wild lettuce field

We are a family owned and operated business. I first became interested in wild lettuces in the early 2000's. I had been reading about the history of plants in religion and ritual. It struck me that of all of the billions of species of plants in the world, how few we use daily. One can look in their medicine cabinet and find almost nothing made from a natural product. In the spice rack we also have a rather limited variety of plants. On the recreational side there are but a few plants, and on the ritualistic side even fewer. I wanted to discover a useful plant medicine. In my reading I came across the curious tale of wild lettuce, also known as the fabled opium lettuce.

In my research I found many plants, but wild lettuce was the one that intrigued me the most. How is it that something so common as lettuce could be a useful plant for anything other than salad? Upon further research I discovered that the wild variety of lettuce, bitter and almost useless as a food, had been almost forgotten to the sands of time. I found that the history went back as far as the ancient astronomers, and that it had been used at one time or another from everything from fertility rituals to modern treatments for restless sleep, colds, aches, pains, and even hair loss.

I discovered that there were a few manufacturers still making wild lettuce extract products, but no one was making them under one roof. Quality was also a big issue. I took a class in web design and used my family's knowledge of farming, engineering, and manufacturing to begin the long journey of reviving the industry of wild lettuce.
